The Belonging Project: Building Communities Where Everyone Matters

By Bishop Bonnie L. Radden

Companionship Coordinator, Pathways 2 Promise

We live in a time when many people are surrounded by others, yet still feel profoundly alone.

Across our nation, loneliness, isolation, anxiety, grief, depression, and emotional distress have reached unprecedented levels. People are searching for connection. They are longing to be understood. They are hoping someone will notice they are struggling and remind them that they matter.

At Pathways 2 Promise, we believe healing begins with connection.

That belief is at the heart of The Belonging Project, a national movement dedicated to building communities where everyone matters.

The Belonging Project is founded on three simple but powerful truths:

You Are Seen.

You Belong.

You Are Not Alone.

These are more than campaign themes. They are messages of hope that have the power to transform lives.

When people feel seen, they feel valued.

When people feel valued, they discover hope.

When people experience belonging, they begin to heal.

And when people know they are not alone, they find the courage to keep moving forward.

Throughout the summer, Community Trainers, faith leaders, healthcare professionals, educators, advocates, and community members across the country are participating in daily Acts of Belonging. These simple acts remind us that meaningful change often begins with ordinary moments of compassion.

A smile.

A phone call.

A handwritten note.

An invitation.

A conversation.

A listening ear.

These may seem like small actions, but they create powerful ripples of connection throughout our communities.

The Belonging Project is also rooted in the principles of Companionship, Pathways 2 Promise's approach to walking alongside individuals experiencing emotional distress, mental health challenges, grief, loneliness, or life's difficult transitions. Companionship reminds us that healing is not something we do to people; it is something we experience together.

At its core, belonging is about relationship.

It is about creating spaces where people feel welcomed rather than judged.

Heard rather than dismissed.

Valued rather than overlooked.

Supported rather than abandoned.

As we move through this campaign, we invite individuals, families, congregations, healthcare organizations, schools, nonprofits, and neighborhoods to join us in creating communities of connection and compassion.

We believe every person deserves to be seen.

We believe every person deserves to belong.

We believe every person deserves to know they are not alone.

Together, we can build stronger communities.

Together, we can reduce loneliness and isolation.

Together, we can create a culture of connection, compassion, and hope.

Because no one should walk alone.
